The MEM Seminar Series 2003 /2004

Abstract

In this seminar, Ms Boey will trace the landscaping of  HDB new towns  since its inception in the 1960s until the 21st Century. She will explain how the Garden City Concept is incorporated into HDB’s landscape policies through the creative landscape designs.

The hierarchy of parks, green connectors, precinct and inter-precinct spaces are identified in Tampines New Town, and the environmental concepts which she spent over ten years in planning, designing and implementing will be discussed. The new town won the UN Habitat Award in 1991.

With higher density housing, roof gardens are now integrated into the housing as part of the built environment. HDB and other government authorities’ efforts in this area will also be discussed in this seminar.

There is a need to strike a balance between greenery and the built environment and the seminar will consider the problems of plant maintenance cost versus the dense and lush planting of the “condominium-style living”.
